 Preparing "chow" is a never-ending job, especially with a couple of thousand troops aboard and one whose importance every Commanding Officer well knows. Along with mail, "chow" is a chief topic of discussion and it would be a rare and wonderful ship that had no griping or complaining on these subjects. One of the two rates for African American in World War II was a Messman.
