Aircraft carriers authorized during the terms of earlier CNOs became part of the battle fleet. USS Lexington CV-2 and USS Saratoga CV-3 were commissioned in 1927. Building commenced on USS Ranger CV-4, the first ship designed and constructed as an aircraft carrier.
