Yangtze River Gunboats
Yangtze River Gunboats
R. E. Goode
Accession Number: 68-550-AB
Original work: Poster
Original size: 21 by 28 inches

United States gunboats operated on the Yangtze River since 1854, protecting Americans and their trading interests in what was viewed as a primitive country. As communists battled nationalists for rule in China and as Japan became more aggressive, the gunboats were deemed more necessary for peacekeeping, but ultimately the force proved too small for a 20th century power struggle
