This painting highlights the women of the color guard of the Marine Corps at Quantico, Virginia. In 1949, the first African American woman, Annie E. Graham of Detroit, Michigan enlisted in the Marine Corps. The next day she was joined by another African American woman, Ann E. Lamb in New York City.
