As the exchange ground on, the piles of clothing the communist POWs had thrown away became mountainous. At first the communists treated the clothing (for the benefit of Red newsmen and photographers) as if it were infested with all manner of bacteria, pushing it aside with discarded crutches or propaganda lost its value and Chinese nurses were called to pick it up and clear the way.
