Evangeline Bailey became the first woman to join the United States Navy Band in 1972, singing with the Concert Band and the Commodores jazz ensemble, as well as briefly with the Sea Chanters chorus. She started in the U.S. Navy as part of the hospital corps until being convinced to audition for the Navy Band.
