Although the path of the POW convoy is in the neutral zone and restricted for military, this soon was not the case. From the moment the civilians knew that not only tins cups were being thrown away but warm blankets, boots, pants and jackets, they appeared on the road and in the brush, waiting silently until the convoy passed, then rushing to pick up the spoils thrown by a passing enemy. The children laughing, but the men serious under their loads; the adults knew all too well what this winter was to bring and the value of his burden.
