In this portrait, Sir George Cockburn is cited as a Major General of the Royal Marines, an honorary title conferred upon him in 1821. After his raid on Washington, he was knighted in the Order of the Bath. In 1815, when Napoleon surrendered at the Battle of Waterloo, the deposed French emperor was put in Cockburn’s charge for transportation to the island of St. Helena.
