One month after Admiral Kelso took office, Iraq invaded Kuwait. The world community demanded immediate withdrawal. A coalition of nations began a military build-up in the region and instituted a sea blockade and no-fly zone. When these measures did not induce a withdrawal, the coalition attacked, forcing the invaders out and chasing them into southern Iraq USS La Salle (AGF-3) opens up a channel to the port city of Ash Shuaybah signaling the relief of Kuwait and the return of commercial traffic.
