Post WWII development of surface-to-air missile systems led to the creation of the Aegis missile. At first they were mounted on modified destroyers, but in 1991 a new class of destroyers, named for Arleigh Burke, was launched. These vessels were specifically designed for the Aegis and are versatile in the types of operations they are capable of supporting. USS Curtis Wilbur (DDG-54) was the fourth of the class, commissioned in 1994.
