Admiral Louis E. Denfeld believed that the Navy needed aviation integrated with the fleet. During his tour, VF-17A became the first carrier qualified jet squadron. Denfeld also initially won approval to construct the first “super carrier” USS United States, but the project was summarily halted by the new Secretary of Defense Louis A. Johnson. Denfeld’s public protest over this matter ended with his resignation.
