Though the Korean War had cooled to a truce, other confrontations with Communism in Asia reinforced the need for conventional war capability. The Navy helped in the evacuation of refugees from North Vietnam to South Vietnam in 1954-5 as part of “Passage to Freedom,” and in 1955 Taiwanese forces and civilians were evacuated from the Tachen (or Dachen) Islands.
