Airships had been used by the Navy in World War I as U-boat hunters, and through the 1920’s exploration of their potential continued. In 1923, the first rigid airship, USS Shenandoah (ZR-1) made its maiden flight. The following year USS Los Angeles (ZR-3), featured in this poster, was commissioned from Luftschiffbau Zeppelin as a war reparation project.
