On 5 December 2023 USS Pearl Harbor (LSD-52) left Pearl Harbor after a six-month deployment to return to its home port in San Diego. Later that day about fifty miles south of the island of Oahu, the Pearl Harbor set up a station for two US Army CH-47 Chinook helicopters and fifteen Army pilots to get or update their ship landing qualifications. For roughly four hours the choppers flew roughly sixty approaches and landings to Pearl Harbor’s flight deck. The crew of the Pearl Harbor also got valuable training that day. This painting was accomplished with oil paints on linen. It was varnished using a single layer of GamvarGloss by Gamblin. Due to a good bit of concurrent travel and the detail of the scene, this painting was on the easel for about a month. I was a passenger aboard Pearl Harbor from Pearl Harbor to San Diego. It was my first full embark from port to port and everything was new to me. I was fascinated with flight ops aboard a ship other than an aircraft carrier and I knew this scene was going to be a painting. I only depicted a little bit of roll in the painting, but in reality, the deck was pitching and rolling during the entire voyage and it took several days for me to get my “sea legs.” After returning to land it took about three weeks to get my “land legs” back.
