Leaving Nebraska
Leaving Nebraska
Douglas Rowe
Accession Number: 2025-012-03
Original work: Oil on Linen
Original size: 21 by 15 inches

On Tuesday 27 August 2024 I took the photo used to accomplish this painting just after coming up through the rear hatch and getting my camera (phone) back six days after embarking. Shortly after this the escort vessel pulled alongside and I disembarked with a few sailors to start the trip back to the sub base and ultimately home the next morning. Depicted in the painting are (from foreground to the sail) FT3 Melvin Mondragon, LT Cliven Noel, ETVCM Chris Olin, and CDR Vance Scott on the bridge. Why I chose this topic: I met CDR Vance Scott in the summer of 2023 while displaying my work at the SAC Museum between Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska in conjunction with Navy Week Lincoln. CDR Scott came through on a tour and recognized the painting I had already done of the Nebraska. We talked for a little bit and I told him I’d like to spend some time aboard and under way to which he replied “I think we can make that happen”. A year to the day later I was aboard and under water for an incredible under way. Painting Details: This painting was completed on 16 January 2025. It has been roughly a four-week project with leave and a trip interspersed. I used a pre-gessoed smooth Centurion linen to aid in detail and I stretched the linen myself. The painting was accomplished using oil paints, Neo-Megilp (Gamblin) gel medium and was varnished with a 50/50 mixture of Gamsol odorless mineral spirits and Galkyd (both Gamblin products.)
