On 8 May 1942 USS Lexington (CV-2) slipped beneath the waves of the Coral Sea following several Japanese bombs and torpedoes, and ultimately being scuttled by torpedoes from USS Phelps (DD-360.) Almost 76 years later on 4 March 2018 the philanthropist Paul G. Allen-funded research vessel Petrel found the Lexington in her final resting place some 10,000 feet below the surface.
Why I chose this topic:
I was provided some of the original discovery video footage by NHHC’s Underwater Archaeology to research possible underwater paintings depicting major warships’ final resting places.
