In 1987 Cdr Gil Rud, Blue Angels Commander and Flight Demonstration Leader (“Boss”) of the US Navy’s Blue Angels transitioned his team from flying the A-4 Skyhawk to the F/A-18A/B Hornet. In 2021, “Boss” Cdr Brian Kesselring was in the same position leading the Blue Angels flying the Hornet and transitioning the team to the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet. These are the last two transitions of the Blue Angels from one aircraft to another and both of the leaders are from the Fargo, North Dakota area; Rud from nearby Portland, and Brian from Fargo. Even more interesting is that both Rud and Kesselring were present at the 1986 Fargo AirSho; Rud as leader of the Blue Angels in their A-4s and Kesselring as a six-year-old spectator. On 26 April 2022 the two were present and honored in a special ceremony to launch a new Blue Angels-themed exhibit at the Fargo Air Museum.
