Combatants in the 2nd Marine Division patrolling the Saudi–Kuwaiti border operated during the coldest winter in recorded Saudi history. Temperatures on the rain swept desert dropped in the low 30’s and 40 mile-an–hour winds at night drove the wind chill factor down into the teens. The morning after this patrol the Marines, and the artist, awoke with ice on their sleeping bags.
