In the process of safely getting an aircraft started and out of typically crowded parking areas to the taxiway no one is more important than ground crew. Depicted here is a crew chief confirming it is clear to “crank” the number one engine on a Navy F-18 Hornet. She has surveyed the area for possible risks of jet blast to personnel and equipment and deemed it safe for the pilot to start engines. During the start she will also be on the lookout for any malfunctions, especially leaks or fire, and is ready to handle any rare abnormalities that arise.
