after a painting by Charles Nahl (1818-1878). The original painting is at the Smithsonian. Nahl came from a long line of artists and sculptors. He emigrated from Hesse, Germany, in 1846, then moved from New York to California during the Gold Rush. While unsuccessful in finding gold, he became one of California’s first significant artists.
