based on a drawing John David Borthwick (1824-1892). This lithograph was published in Harper’s Weekly Oct. 3, 1857. Borthwick, trained as an artist in his native Scotland, then used his inheritance to fund a trip around the world. From 1851-1854 he traveled extensively in California, observing and sketching gold rush scenes and the ethnic groups he encountered.
