Original work: after an illustration by Alonzo Chappel, colorized
As it became clear that a war with Britain had begun, the Continental Congress authorized an attack on Fort Ticonderoga, a thinly staffed historic fortification on the south end of Lake Champlain. This drawing romanticizes the actual event. However the capture of Fort Ticonderoga provided the Americans a staging ground for the invasion of Canada and the captured artillery would become critical to ending the British siege of Boston in March 1776.
