Original size: 28 by 35 inches

Early Marines were known as "soldiers of the sea," and artists often depict them serving on board U.S. Navy vessels or charging onto far-away beaches. But it was totally appropriate for a 19th century Marine officer to pose with a horse for his portrait. Gamble was commissioned as a 17-year-old second lieutenant in the Marine Corps in 1809 and served for 27 years. He is chiefly remembered as the only Marine to command two U.S. Navy ships during the War of 1812. The Arabian in this painting was a gift from his family. Anthony Lewis De Rose (1803-36) painted portraits in New York, including a watercolor of Davy Crockett.
