On 1 Nov 1943, as a pilot for Marine Fighting Squadron 215 in the air battle over Bougainville, 1stLt Robert Hanson—nicknamed ‘Butcher Bob’ for his blend of nonchalance and ferocity—singlehandedly attacked 6 Japanese Kates. 3 went up in flames and several others were forced to jettison their bombs. Shot down by a Japanese rear gunner, Hanson set his Corsair down in the water, paddling for 6 hours in his life raft, crooning Cole Porter, until he was rescued. Hanson returned to his squad, shooting down 20 enemy aircraft in a period of 17 days for a total of 25.
