CPL RICHARD E. BUSH, USMC • 16 April 1945 • Okinawa

On 16 April 1945, during the fierce battle for Okinawa Cpl Richard Bush was seriously wounded and evacuated with other Marines behind a cover of rocks. When a Japanese grenade landed in their midst, the wounded corporal pulled it under his body, absorbing the force of its charge. The explosion tore off several fingers and left one eye permanently blinded, but miraculously, Bush survived. And because of his act of selflessness, so did his comrades.
