Sgt JOHN BASILONE, USMC • 24-25 Oct 1942 • Battle for Henderson Field, Guadalcanal
When a fierce attack by the enemy put one of his machine gun sections out of action, Sgt Basilone moved an extra gun into position and, under continual fire, repaired another and personally manned it, gallantly holding his line. With ammunition critically low and the supply lines cut off, Basilone then battled his way through hostile lines with urgently needed shells for his gunners, helping to ensure the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment.
