Marines converted some Bell UH-1E “Huey” helicopters into heavily armed gunships. With their increased firepower, Hueys escorted lightly armed Marine Boeing-Vertol CH-46 transport helicopters into and out of enemy-held landing zones and provided close-air support for troops on the ground.
