Elize McKelvey
Accession Number: McK31
Original work: Sepia prismacolor on paper
Original size:

Sergeant McKelvey and three other combat artists embedded with 7th Marine Regiment in Al Anbar Province, Iraq, in 2019, covering Operation Inherent Resolve. She came across Alfi, who had been informally adopted by Marines as their base dog, even though the practice was discouraged. The dog followed the artists and hung out with them that day. McKelvey recalls that he “was like the mascot and the mood booster for the unit.” Elize McKelvey graduated in 2012 with her BFA in illustration, and one day after receiving her diploma she shipped off to Parris Island to earn the title U.S. Marine. In 2015, she deployed with the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit to document Marines through her military occupational specialty, which was combat camera. Later she served as part of the Headquarters staff at the Pentagon, honing her art skills while leading Marines as the graphics operations chief. She created the official portrait of the 37th Commandant, and her unique skill sets as an artist allowed her to push the boundaries of her field and its capabilities to tell stories. In 2016, she officially became part of the combat art program and deployed to Iraq. Staff Sergeant McKelvey left the Corps in 2020. Today, she is pursuing her Master of Fine Arts.
