Artist Howard Terpning created this painting for a Marine Corps recruiting poster. The interplay between the Marine and the McDonnell F-4 Phantom II aircraft symbolizes the close relationship between aviation and ground forces. The Marine carries his standard-issue select-fire battle rifle, the M14.
Terpning, a Marine in 1945-1946, is well known for his commercial art, movie posters, and paintings of the American West. In 1967, he took his art kit to Vietnam for one month as a Marine Corps combat artist. Terpning remarked that he was profoundly changed by the experience.
