PVT DALE HANSEN, USMCR • 7 May 1945 • Okinawa

On 7 May 1945, in the battle for Okinawa, Pvt Dale Hansen armed himself with a rocket launcher, crawling to an exposed position where he attacked and destroyed a Japanese pillbox. After his weapon was destroyed, he seized a rifle and continued his one-man assault, killing 4 hostiles before it jammed, and using the butt to beat off 2 remaining Japanese soldiers. After rearming, Hansen fearlessly advanced again, wiping out a strong mortar position.
