Marine and Scout Dog
Marine and Scout Dog
SSst. Les L. Amen, USMC
Accession Number: 265-1-9
Original work: Watercolor
Original size:

During the Vietnam War (1965-75 for the Marines), Marine Corps scout dog teams consisted of one dog, usually a German shepherd, and one handler. The canopied jungle terrain was dense, unforgiveable, and the home of guerrilla fighters who used unconventional methods. Dogs, with their keen senses, could detect the presence of the enemy well before the infantry units to which they were assigned. A scout dog and his handler—as portrayed here by Staff Sergeant Amen—would join a unit as requested to serve as its eyes and ears, walking point on the lookout for booby trap wires, ambushes, hidden caches of food and weapons, and enemy snipers. Lester Leroy Amen (1954-2014), born in Nebraska, joined the Marine Corps the year after high school graduation, serving first as an aviation ordnance man and then as an illustrator. In 1984, he was accepted into the Marine Corps combat art program. Amen earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Corcoran College of Art and Design in 1988. After leaving the Marine Corps, he worked as a commercial graphic artist in Northern Virginia, where he was also known for being a gifted guitarist and vocalist.
