CPL TONY STEIN, USMCR • 19 Feb 1945 • Iwo Jima

On 19 Feb 1945, Cpl Tony Stein stormed a series of hostile pillboxes during the assault on Iwo Jima. Wielding a customized .30 caliber ANM2 Browning machine gun that he dubbed ‘the Stinger,’ Stein made 8 trips back to the beach to retrieve ammunition, bringing a wounded Marine with him each time. Evacuated to a hospital ship after being wounded, Stein returned to Iwo after hearing of the beating his unit was taking. On 1 March he was killed by a sniper while leading a patrol.
