On 20 Nov 1943 1stLt William ‘Hawk’ Hawkins, led his sniper platoon up the ramp of the Betio pier on Tarawa, engaging the Japanese in fierce hand-to-hand combat and launching attacks on enemy installations. On 21 Nov, Hawk initiated an assault on 5 machine gun nests. Wounded in the chest, he continued to wipe out pillboxes until being felled by a sniper’s bullet.
