When the battle takes Marines where their vehicles and aircraft cannot go, they rely on an older tried and true method to pack in supplies, food, and ammunition and retrieve the wounded. That was the case in the mountains of Afghanistan. Marines are trained to adapt to such a situation at the 16-day Animal Packers Course, taught at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center in Bridgeport, California. The class was first offered in 1983 and continues to have relevancy.
Combat artist Kris Battles was a student at the course in 2012. From his sketches, like this one, he created a bronze sculpture of a Marine leading a fully packed mule down the steep slope of a mountain.
