The Marine Corps introduced its first two scout dog platoons to Vietnam warfare in early 1966. It was the first time Marines had used dogs in combat since World War II. The handler in this scene has his dog on-leash. Handlers trained with 15-foot leashes, but off-leash operations were also conducted, which freed the Marine’s hands but put more distance between him and his dog. Handlers carried not only their own weapons and gear but also their dogs’ food, water, and first aid supplies.
Trella Koczwara (1945-2020) was the first female invited to serve as a civilian combat artist in Vietnam, assigned to I Corps. In 1970, she documented Recon Marines, an orphanage, and the Vietnamese people. She returned to observe military operations in 1992-93 as an artist covering Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. A native of New Jersey, she obtained her Master of Fine Arts from William Paterson University. She lived most of her life in Tennessee, where she taught art at Tennessee Technical University and painted from her own studio.
