Marine Mascots
Captain Leonard H. Dermott, USMCR
Accession Number: 3-1-63
Original work: Watercolor on Paper
Original size: 22 by 30 inches

Since 1957, 16 English bulldogs named Chesty have been mascots of the United States Marine Corps. This symbol of the fighting spirit of the Corps is named after Lieutenant General Lewis “Chesty” Puller, the most decorated Marine in history. Chesty, who resides at Marine Barracks Washington, participates in Evening Parades held at the Barracks, drill ceremonies, and other community relations programs as the Marine Corps’ chief morale booster—often clad in uniform vests that indicate his rank. The bulldog is described as tough, fearless, tenacious, and muscular—a good fit to represent Marines. Combat artist Leonard Dermott depicts Private Chesty IV (left) and Staff Sergeant Chesty III (right) with handler Sergeant Donnie D. Blair on the parade deck at Marine Barracks Washington, with the Home of the Commandants in the background. This watercolor reflects the artist’s love of nature, art, and the Marine Corps.
