On 26 Feb 1945, PFC Douglas Jacobson, assumed the duties of a bazooka man who’d been killed, waging a relentless battle as his unit fought to penetrate the Japanese cross-island defenses on Iwo Jima. He destroyed 2 hostile machine-gun nests, exploded a large blockhouse, and wiped out an earth-covered rifle emplacement, reducing 6 enemy positions around the perimeter to rubble. He then volunteered his services to an adjacent assault company, neutralizing the firepower of the enemy in the sector.
