COL MERRITT A. EDSON, USMC
13 – 14 Sept 1942 • Guadalcanal
On 13 - 14 Sept 1942, Col Merritt ‘Mike’ Edson led approximately 800 Marines in an historic 24-hour stand against the repeated assaults of 2,500 Japanese soldiers on Lunga Ridge at Guadalcanal. Throughout the brutal fighting, Edson never left his men’s sides, fearlessly exposing himself to fire and inspiring them to hold their ground until the last of the Japanese forces was pushed off the ridge.
