Combat artist Charles Grow was attached to 3d Battalion, 3d Marines, in early 1991 during Operation Desert Shield. He captured this portrait of Corporal Birch holding a puppy named Lucky, who was the unofficial mascot of Kilo Company, 3d Battalion. In late January, Corporal Birch and his fellow Marines fought in the first major ground engagement of the Gulf War against invading Iraqi forces in and around the city of Khafji, Saudi Arabia.
Charles Grow enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1982, serving as a combat cameraman. A largely self-taught artist, Sergeant Grow came to the attention of the Marine Corps combat art program in the mid-1980s, and he later documented Desert Shield/Storm and other operations. Captain Grow retired from the Marine Corps in 2003 and served as the Deputy Director of the National Museum of the Marine Corps for many years while continuing to create works for the art collection, including paintings of Wounded Warrior activities, portraits of USMC Medal of Honor recipients, and paintings based on his Marine experiences.
