PFC HOWARD EPPERSON, USMCR • 25 June 1944 • Saipan
On the night of 25 June 1944, PFC Howard Epperson and two Marines came under attack on Saipan. Epperson, behind the gun, maintained stream of fire, holding off the assailants. When a grenade landed in their trench, he leapt from his gun and went for it, shielding his companions. The blast tore off his arm and shoulder, yet he hoisted himself back behind the machine gun, raining the ground with fire until overcome by blood loss.
