On 1 February 1944, PFC Richard Anderson was hunting snipers on Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands. Entering a shell crater occupied by 3 other Marines, Anderson was about to throw a grenade at an enemy position when it slipped through his hands and rolled toward the men. Without time to retrieve the weapon and throw it, PFC Anderson hurled himself on the grenade, saving the lives of his comrades.
