On 7 April 1943, 150 enemy planes were headed for the U.S. fleet at Tulagi. 1stLt James Swett took to the air in his F4F Wildcat fighter, flying into the face of a large formation of Japanese dive-bombers. Swett pursued, shooting down 4 while under heavy fire. He was attacking a 5th when he ran out of ammunition. With a shattered windshield and shot-off oil cooler, Swett knew he’d never make it to base, so he decided to ditch his Wildcat, struggling out of the bullet-ridden cockpit just before it sank. He went on to fly 103 missions, downing more than 15 Japanese planes.
