In August 1966, Major Lee led a small relief team to aid a platoon overrun by enemy forces. Inserted by helicopter, he rallied the overtaxed Marines to survive through the night, even though he was severely wounded by grenade fragments. The platoon, along with Lee, was evacuated by Boeing Vertol CH-46 helicopters the following morning. President Johnson awarded Lee the Medal of Honor for his “indomitable fighting spirit, superb leadership, and great personal valor in the face of tremendous odds.”
Late in his career, well known Marine Corps artist Charles Waterhouse began documenting Medal of Honor scenes, completing 220 depictions of Marines and Navy corpsmen performing acts of sacrifice and heroism.
