On 18 July 1918, Gy Sgt Louis Cukela was with the 5th Marine Regiment near Soissons, France. In the face of torrential machine gun fire, he crawled from the flank, inching toward the German lines until he was behind the first enemy position. He rushed the emplacement, taking on the entire crew with his bayonet and using the Germans’ own grenades to destroy the strongpoint. Cukela went on to capture 2 machine guns and 4 enemy soldiers helping to turn the tide of war.
