On 3 Oct 1918, Pvt John J. Kelly— described by fellow Marines as “a ball of fury”— was at Blanc Mont Ridge in France. Dashing through no-man’s land Kelly lobbed a grenade at an enemy machine gun nest, killing one German and taking out his sidearm to shoot another. He returned through a barrage of artillery, bringing with him 8 German soldiers, held at gunpoint.
