Teufel Hunden
Attributed to Charles Buckles Falls
Accession Number: 2014.170.1
Original work: Poster
Original size: 27.75 by 18.875 inches

This famous and humorous recruiting poster shows a bulldog wearing a helmet with an eagle, globe, and anchor device in hot pursuit of a spiked helmeted dachshund. It was published in 1917. The words on the poster refer to the nickname the Marine Corps received in World War I—Teufel Hunden, or Devil Dogs. (The actual spelling would have been Teufelshunde.) The first written use of the term was prior to Belleau Wood, and it remains popular with Marines to the present day. While the artist has used a block-printed “H” to identify himself, the artist of this work is usually listed as either “unknown” or “H?” In the pamphlet “The Graphic Art of C. B. Falls” (1982), this poster is attributed to Falls. Why he would have used an “H” instead of his usual blocked “F” is not known.
