On 25 Feb1966, SSgt Peter Connor was leading his platoon on a search and destroy operation in Vietnam. Intending to charge the hole and hurl a grenade at an enemy spider hole emplacement, Connor pulled the pin, instantly realizing that the firing mechanism was faulty. Knowing he couldn’t cover the distance to the target in time, and that throwing the grenade would result in the death or injury of fellow Marines, Connor held the grenade next to his own body, absorbing the explosion and sparing the lives of his comrades.
