PFC James Anderson, Jr arrived in Vietnam as a rifleman with Company F, 2d Bn, 3rd Marine Division in Quang Tri Province. On 18 Feb 1967, a little more than a year after Anderson enlisted, he was mortally wounded when he covered a grenade with his body to save the lives of his fellow Marines. PFC Anderson was the first African American Marine to receive the Medal of Honor.
