CAPT DONALD G. COOK is the first Marine to be awarded a Medal of Honor for his actions as a POW. For nearly 3 years, the Vietcong held Cook in a series of primitive jungle camps where he assumed responsibility for the welfare of his fellow prisoners—unselfishly giving more needy men his medicine and food, nursing them, inspiring them and doing his best to broker their freedom. In the face of repeated beatings, Cook never strayed from the Code of Conduct, stating only his name, rank, birthdate and serial number. According to a list of prisoners who died in captivity released by the Vietcong in 1972, Cook died of malaria on 8 Dec 1967. He was 33 years old.
