He received his Bachelor of Arts from Austin College, Sherman, Texas, and studied art for a year in France.

Deckert was a long-time contributor as both an artist and author to ARTS Magazine.  In recent years, he created portraits of first responders who fought the 2017 wild fires in California and contributed works to both the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Coast Guard art collections.

The California Art Club recently accepted Deckert, who is also a landscape artist, as a full member.
